Charles XIV John Bernadotte

Gen 1 Β· 1763 - 1844

Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born in 1763 in Pau in south western France, the son of a provincial lawyer, and rose through the revolutionary French army to become a Marshal of the Empire under Napoleon and Prince of Pontecorvo. In 1810 the Swedish Riksdag, looking for an heir for the childless Charles XIII, elected him crown prince of Sweden; he took the name Charles John and converted to Lutheranism. He succeeded to the thrones of Sweden and Norway in 1818 as Charles XIV John and reigned until his death in 1844, founding the House of Bernadotte, which reigns in Sweden to this day. With his wife Desideria, born Desiree Clary, he had one son, the future Oscar I.

Desiree Clary

Gen 1 Β· 1777 - 1860

Desiree Clary, who reigned as Queen Desideria, was born in Marseille in 1777, the daughter of a wealthy silk merchant. In her youth she was engaged to the young Napoleon Bonaparte, and her sister Julie married his brother Joseph; in 1798 she married General Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, and their only child, the future Oscar I, was born in Paris the following year. When her husband was elected crown prince of Sweden she found the northern climate and the formality of the Stockholm court difficult, and lived largely in Paris between 1811 and 1823 before returning for her son's wedding and settling in Sweden for good. She was crowned queen in 1829 and died in Stockholm in 1860.

Oscar I Bernadotte

Gen 2 Β· 1799 - 1859

Oscar I was born Joseph Francois Oscar Bernadotte in Paris in 1799, the only child of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and Desiree Clary, and came to Sweden as a boy of eleven when his father was elected crown prince. King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 until his death in 1859, he was the first Bernadotte brought up Swedish, and his reign brought liberal reform: equal inheritance rights for women in 1845, reform of the prison system, which he had studied and written a book about, freer trade, and a cautious sympathy for Scandinavianism. He married Josephine of Leuchtenberg in 1823, and their sons included Charles XV and Oscar II.

Charles XV Bernadotte

Gen 3 Β· 1826 - 1872

Charles XV was born in Stockholm in 1826, the eldest son of Oscar I and Josephine of Leuchtenberg, and reigned as king of Sweden and Norway from 1859 until his death in 1872. Informal, popular and a gifted amateur painter and poet, he left much of the detail of government to his ministers, and his reign is remembered above all for the reform of 1866 that replaced the ancient Riksdag of the Estates with a two chamber parliament. He married Louise of the Netherlands in 1850; their only surviving child, Louise, became queen of Denmark, so the Swedish throne passed at his death to his younger brother Oscar II.

Oscar II Bernadotte

Gen 3 Β· 1829 - 1907

Oscar II was born in Stockholm in 1829, the third son of Oscar I, and became king in 1872 on the death of his elder brother Charles XV. He reigned over Sweden until 1907 and over Norway until 1905, when the union between the two kingdoms was dissolved and he renounced the Norwegian throne for himself and his house, a crisis he handled with a restraint that preserved good relations between the countries. A trained naval officer, he was also a writer and translator of Goethe and Herder and an energetic patron of science, polar exploration and the arts. With Sophia of Nassau he had four sons, among them Gustaf V and Prince Oscar Bernadotte.

Gen 4 Β· 1861 - 1951

Prince Carl, Duke of Vastergotland, born in 1861, was the third son of Oscar II and Sophia of Nassau and a cavalry general in the Swedish army. He is remembered chiefly for humanitarian work: as chairman of the Swedish Red Cross for more than four decades he organised prisoner of war exchanges and relief transports through the First World War and famine relief in Russia, and the organisation grew into a major institution under him. In 1897 he married Princess Ingeborg of Denmark. Their daughters married into three royal houses, which made him a grandfather of Harald V of Norway and Albert II of Belgium. He died in 1951 at the age of ninety.

Prince Eugen, Duke of Narke, born in 1865, was the youngest son of Oscar II and Sophia of Nassau and one of Sweden's most important landscape painters. Trained in Paris, he worked in a national romantic style, and canvases such as The Old Castle and The Cloud are fixtures of Swedish art history; he also painted large public murals, including work for Stockholm City Hall. He never married, and built his home, Waldemarsudde on Djurgarden in Stockholm, into a studio and a major private collection of contemporary Swedish art, which he left to the nation at his death in 1947. It is now a public museum, and he is remembered as the Painter Prince.

A naval officer by training, he published poetry, essays and travel books, and was an early documentary film maker whose expeditions to Africa and Asia in the 1920s and 1930s produced both films and popular accounts of them. He married Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia in 1908; their only child was Lennart, later Count Bernadotte of Wisborg, and the marriage was dissolved in 1914. He spent much of his later life at Stenhammar in Sodermanland and died in 1965.

Rockefeller Family Tree - America's Oil and Philanthropy Dynasty

The Rockefeller family is an American business and philanthropic dynasty founded on the Standard Oil fortune of John D. Rockefeller, whose descendants have shaped American banking, conservation, medicine, modern art and national politics across five generations. From a modest upstate New York farmhouse the family rose to control the largest industrial enterprise of the Gilded Age, then spent the twentieth century converting that fortune into foundations, museums, parks and public office. ## Origins The line begins with William Avery Rockefeller (1810-1906), a traveling salesman from Granger, New York, and his wife Eliza Davison (1813-1889), who married in 1837 and raised six children in Richford, Moravia and Owego before the family moved to Ohio. Their eldest son, John D. Rockefeller, began as a Cleveland bookkeeper, entered oil refining in 1863 and incorporated the Standard Oil Company in 1870 together with his younger brother William Rockefeller. By the 1880s Standard Oil refined the great majority of American petroleum, until the Supreme Court ordered its dissolution in 1911. ## Notable members John D. Rockefeller and Laura Spelman Rockefeller had four children who reached adulthood, among them the Chicago arts patron Edith Rockefeller McCormick and the family's only son, John D. Rockefeller Jr. With Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, a co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art, John Jr. had six children who defined the family's public face: Abby "Babs" Rockefeller Mauze, the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller III, Nelson Rockefeller, who served four terms as Governor of New York and then as Vice President of the United States, the conservationist and venture capitalist Laurance Rockefeller, Winthrop Rockefeller, Governor of Arkansas, and the banker David Rockefeller of Chase Manhattan. Their children, known within the family as the Cousins, include Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, the Asmat art collector Michael Rockefeller, Lieutenant Governor Winthrop Paul Rockefeller of Arkansas, the economist Neva Goodwin and the Synergos founder Peggy Dulany. ## Significance The family's lasting mark is institutional rather than dynastic. The Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, Rockefeller University, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Rockefeller Center, the Museum of Modern Art, Colonial Williamsburg, Lincoln Center, the Asia Society and several national parks all trace their founding or their endowment to a Rockefeller. Few American families have moved so completely from industrial fortune to organized philanthropy and elected office within three generations. | Fact | Details | | --- | --- | | Surname | Rockefeller | | Origin | Richford, New York, United States | | Founder | John D. Bourbon Family Tree - The House of Bourbon in France and Spain

The House of Bourbon is a European royal dynasty, descended in the male line from the Capetian kings of France, that ruled France from 1589 to 1792 and again from 1814 to 1848, and that still reigns in Spain today under King Felipe VI. Over four centuries its members also held the thrones of Navarre, Naples and Sicily, Parma and Etruria, which makes it one of the most widely established royal houses in European history. ## Origins The family takes its name from the lordship of Bourbon in the Auvergne, centred on Bourbon-l'Archambault. Its royal line descends from Robert, Count of Clermont, a younger son of King Louis IX of France, whose marriage to Beatrice of Burgundy, heiress of Bourbon, carried the name into the Capetian house in 1272. For three centuries afterwards the Bourbons were powerful French princes of the blood rather than kings. That changed with Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendome, whose marriage to Jeanne d'Albret, queen regnant of Navarre, produced Henry of Navarre. When the Valois line died out in 1589, Henry was the senior Capetian heir, and he took the French throne as Henry IV. ## Notable members Henry IV ended the French Wars of Religion and issued the Edict of Nantes in 1598. His son Louis XIII, guided by Cardinal Richelieu, built the centralised state that Louis XIV, the Sun King, carried to its height across a reign of seventy-two years, the longest of any European sovereign, and to the palace of Versailles. Louis XV and then Louis XVI inherited that system, and Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette, were swept away by the French Revolution in 1792. The dynasty returned with Louis XVIII in 1814 and Charles X in 1824, and in 1830 the crown passed to Louis Philippe I of the cadet House of Orleans, the last king to rule in France. ## The Spanish branch In 1700 the childless Charles II of Spain left his crown to Philip, Duke of Anjou, a grandson of Louis XIV. Philip became Philip V, the first Bourbon king of Spain, at the cost of the War of the Spanish Succession, which ended with his renunciation of any claim to the French throne. His descendants include the reforming Charles III, Ferdinand VII, Isabella II, Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII, who left Spain in 1931. The monarchy was restored in 1975 under Juan Carlos I, grandson of Alfonso XIII, who presided over Spain's transition to democracy and abdicated in 2014 in favour of his son Felipe VI. Felipe's elder daughter Leonor, Princess of Asturias, is heir to the throne. ## Significance No other family links the absolute monarchy of Versailles to a working constitutional monarchy in twenty-first century Madrid. Bourbon marriages tied the house to the Habsburgs of Austria and Spain, the dukes of Savoy, the Medici of Florence and the British royal family, so a Bourbon family tree doubles as a map of European dynastic politics from the Reformation to the present day. | Fact | Details | | --- | --- | | Family name | House of Bourbon (Maison de Bourbon, Casa de Borbon) | | Place of origin | Bourbon-l'Archambault, Auvergne, France | | Founder of the line | Robert, Count of Clermont (1256-1317), son of Louis IX | | First king of France | Henry IV, reigned 1589 to 1610 | | Last king to rule France | Louis Philippe I, reigned 1830 to 1848 | | First king of Spain | Philip V, reigned 1700 to 1746 | | Head of the house in Spain | King Felipe VI, since 2014 | | Heir in Spain | Leonor, Princess of Asturias | | Principal seats | Versailles, Fontainebleau, the Louvre, the Royal Palace of Madrid |

Medici Family Tree - The Bankers Who Ruled Renaissance Florence

The House of Medici was a Florentine banking family and political dynasty that rose from mercantile wealth in the late fourteenth century to dominate the Republic of Florence, produced two popes and two queens of France, and ruled as hereditary Grand Dukes of Tuscany for nearly two centuries before the direct male line died out in 1737. ## Origins The family's fortune began with Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici, who founded the Medici Bank around 1397 and built it into one of the most trusted financial institutions in Europe through close ties to the papacy. His son Cosimo de' Medici turned that wealth into political dominance of Florence without ever holding a formal princely title, ruling through alliance, patronage, and public opinion for three decades. Cosimo's descendants, especially his grandson Lorenzo de' Medici, known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, consolidated the family's grip on the city while becoming the era's foremost patrons of Renaissance art and humanist scholarship. ## Notable Members Lorenzo the Magnificent's sons included Giovanni, who became Pope Leo X, the first Medici pope, and whose cousin Giulio later reigned as Pope Clement VII. Lorenzo's granddaughter Catherine de' Medici became queen of France and, as regent, steered the country through the Wars of Religion; a later Medici, Marie de' Medici, likewise became queen of France as the second wife of Henry IV. When the senior line failed with the assassination of Alessandro de' Medici in 1537, the family's junior branch, descended from Cosimo the Elder's brother, provided Cosimo I de' Medici, who was crowned the first Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1569. His descendants, including the scientific patrons Cosimo II and Ferdinando II, ruled Tuscany until Gian Gastone de' Medici, the last Grand Duke, died without an heir in 1737. His sister, Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, outlived him as the family's final member. ## Significance Beyond their political rule, the Medici reshaped European culture through unmatched patronage: they backed Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Galileo Galilei, and financed the buildings, art, and institutions that still define Florence today. Anna Maria Luisa's 1737 Patto di Famiglia bequeathed the family's entire art collection to the Tuscan state on the condition it never leave Florence, directly founding the holdings of the Uffizi Gallery and Pitti Palace. | Fact | Details | |---|---| | Founded | c. 1397, Florence (Medici Bank) | | Founder | Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici | | Seat | Florence; later the Grand Duchy of Tuscany | | Peak title | Grand Duke of Tuscany (from 1569) | | Popes produced | Leo X (1513-1521), Clement VII (1523-1534) | | Queens of France | Catherine de' Medici, Marie de' Medici | | Dynasty ended | 1737 (Gian Gastone); 1743 (Anna Maria Luisa) | | Lasting legacy | Uffizi Gallery and Pitti Palace collections |

Kennedy Family Tree - America's Political Dynasty

The Kennedy family is an Irish American political dynasty from Boston, Massachusetts, whose members have included the 35th President of the United States, three United States senators, four congressmen, several ambassadors, and the founders of the Peace Corps and the Special Olympics. Across four documented generations the family moved from a County Wexford farm to the White House, and its name became shorthand in American public life for both political ambition and public service. ## Origins The American line begins with Patrick Kennedy, a farmer's son from Dunganstown, near New Ross in County Wexford, who emigrated to East Boston during the Great Famine. His son, Patrick Joseph "P. J." Kennedy (1858 to 1929), built a livelihood in the liquor and banking trades and served in both houses of the Massachusetts legislature, becoming one of the Democratic ward leaders who ran the city's Irish Catholic politics. On the other side stood John Francis "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald (1863 to 1950), congressman and twice Mayor of Boston. The two families joined in 1914 when P. J.'s son Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. married Honey Fitz's daughter Rose Fitzgerald. Their nine children, raised between Brookline, Bronxville and the compound at Hyannis Port on Cape Cod, form the generation the world knows. ## Notable members John F. Kennedy served as President from 1961 until his death in 1963, having previously represented Massachusetts in the House and Senate. His brother Robert F. Kennedy was Attorney General, then Senator from New York, and a candidate for the presidency in 1968. Their youngest brother Edward "Ted" Kennedy sat in the United States Senate for almost 47 years and was one of the most productive legislators of his era. The eldest son, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., was a naval aviator killed on a volunteer mission in 1944. Away from elected office, Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics, her husband Sargent Shriver created the Peace Corps and Head Start, and Jean Kennedy Smith founded the arts and disability organisation VSA before serving as United States Ambassador to Ireland. The following generations have produced congressmen, a lieutenant governor, ambassadors, documentary filmmakers, human rights advocates and journalists. ## Significance No other American family has combined electoral success, philanthropy and public visibility on this scale for so long. The Kennedys shaped the civil rights era, the space programme, immigration reform, health care legislation and the modern understanding of disability rights, and their private losses were mourned publicly in a way usually reserved for royalty. The Kennedy Library in Boston, the Kennedy Center in Washington and dozens of schools and institutions carry the name. | Fact | Details | | --- | --- | | Family name | Kennedy | | Irish origin | Dunganstown, County Wexford, Ireland | | American home | Boston and Hyannis Port, Massachusetts | | Founding couple | Patrick Joseph Kennedy and Mary Augusta Hickey | | Best known member | John F.
