Frequently asked questions

What is a GEDCOM (.ged) file?

GEDCOM is the standard file format genealogy software uses to store family trees, so a tree built in one program (Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Gramps, RootsMagic and others) can be opened in another.

How does this GEDCOM viewer work?

Upload your .ged file and it's read entirely in your browser, then turned into a real, editable family tree you can explore straight away. Nothing is uploaded until you choose to view the tree.

Can I convert my GEDCOM to a PDF or image?

Yes. Once your file is loaded into the tree editor, use Export to save it as a high-resolution PNG, or Print, which lets your browser save it as a PDF.

Is there a limit on how many people I can import?

Free, pre-login trees hold up to 60 people. Larger files still import — the tree is built around the first person in your file — and signing in (free) removes the limit for the rest.

Can I go the other way and export my MyRooots tree as GEDCOM?

Yes. Once signed in, any family tree you've built on MyRooots can be exported back out as a standard .ged file from the tree's Export menu, so your data is never locked in.

Is my data private?

Your file is parsed in your browser. Only the names, dates and relationships needed to build the tree are sent to MyRooots when you choose to view it, and it stays private to you until you share it.
