Salankayana (or Salankayana) is the name of both a sage lineage and an ancient ruling dynasty of the Andhra region (circa 3rd–5th centuries CE). The dynastic Salankayanas claimed Brahminical status and used the gotra name in their inscriptions. The sage Salankayana is less prominent in classical narrative literature, yet the gotra is recorded in traditional lists and is historically significant because of its association with one of the early post-Satavahana kingdoms of the eastern Deccan.
The Salankayana gotra therefore bridges the classical Vedic gotra system and the historical reality of Brahminical lineages that also exercised political power in early historic South India. It remains a recognized, if relatively uncommon, gotra among certain communities, especially in the Andhra region.

Name of a sage lineage, also historically the dynastic name of an ancient ruling family in the Andhra region.
No. Gotra and surname are separate systems. Families with many different surnames, across many regions and communities, can share the same gotra, and families with the same surname can belong to different gotras.
Many communities traditionally avoid marriage between people of the same gotra, based on the idea that they share a common patrilineal ancestor. Exact customs vary widely by community and region.
