Kutsa was a Rigvedic sage belonging to the Angirasa family. He is credited with the composition of several hymns in the Rigveda and is mentioned alongside other early seers. In some traditions he is linked with the legendary king Mandhatri, and the gotra’s pravara often appears as Angirasa–Mandhatra–Kautsa. Kutsa is remembered as a devoted worshipper of Indra and as a figure who participated in the early formulation of Vedic ritual and praise.
The Kutsa gotra is one of the smaller but authentically Vedic lineages descending from the Angirasa stem. It is found among certain Brahmin communities and preserves the memory of one of the early hymn-composers of the Rigveda. Like other Angirasa gotras, it shares a broad spiritual kinship with Bharadwaja, Gautama, and Garga lineages.

Name of a Rigvedic sage credited with composing several hymns of the Rigveda.
No. Gotra and surname are separate systems. Families with many different surnames, across many regions and communities, can share the same gotra, and families with the same surname can belong to different gotras.
Many communities traditionally avoid marriage between people of the same gotra, based on the idea that they share a common patrilineal ancestor. Exact customs vary widely by community and region.
