Katyayana Gotra

Katyayana is the name of a celebrated Vedic scholar, grammarian, and ritualist traditionally regarded as a descendant of the sage Kata (hence “Katyayana”). He is the author of the Varttikas on Panini’s Ashtadhyayi, which critically examine and supplement the great grammatical treatise, and is also associated with important Kalpa and Shrauta works. In some traditions he is linked with the authorship or redaction of certain Smriti material.

The Katyayana gotra therefore represents a lineage of exceptional intellectual achievement within the Vedic tradition. It is found among Brahmins who preserve strong traditions of grammar, ritual science, and scholarly commentary. The gotra stands as a reminder that the same ancestral system that produced the great hymn-seers also produced the rigorous analysts and system-builders of later Vedic culture.

This is a reference to gotra names within the traditional Vedic rishi-lineage system, not a surname-to-gotra directory. The same surname can belong to different gotras across different families, communities, and regions. For religious or matrimonial purposes, always confirm your family's actual gotra with a family elder or priest.
