Nastia Liukin Family Tree - The Liukin Gymnastics Family

Valeri Liukin (born 17 December 1966, Aktyubinsk, Kazakh SSR) is a Soviet-born artistic gymnast and coach, and the father of Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin. At the 1987 European Championships he became the first gymnast to perform a triple back somersault on floor. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics he won gold with the Soviet team and on the horizontal bar, shared with Vladimir Artemov, plus silver in the all-around and on parallel bars. He was also a world team champion in 1987 and 1991. He married rhythmic gymnast Anna Kotchneva in 1988 and moved to the United States in 1992. In 1994 he and Yevgeny Marchenko opened the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) in Plano, Texas, where he coached Nastia to the 2008 Olympic all-around title. He later served as coordinator of the U.S. women's national team from 2016 to 2018.

Anna Kotchneva (born 25 January 1970, Moscow) is a Soviet-born rhythmic gymnast and the mother of Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin. Competing for the Soviet Union at the 1987 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, she won the world title with clubs, shared with Bianka Panova, along with bronze medals with hoop and rope. In 1988 she married Soviet Olympic champion Valeri Liukin, and their daughter Nastia was born in Moscow in 1989. The family emigrated to the United States when Nastia was a toddler and made their home in Texas, where Valeri co-founded the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy. Her marriage makes the Liukins one of the rare families with world champions in both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics.

Anastasia "Nastia" Liukin (born 30 October 1989, Moscow) is an American artistic gymnast and the 2008 Olympic all-around champion. The daughter of Soviet Olympic champion Valeri Liukin and rhythmic gymnastics world champion Anna Kotchneva, she moved to the United States as a toddler and trained under her father at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano, Texas. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics she won five medals: all-around gold, silver with the team and on uneven bars, and bronze on balance beam, tying the record for most gymnastics medals by an American at a single Games. She won nine World Championship medals, including beam titles in 2005 and 2007 and the 2005 uneven bars title. She retired in 2012, founded the Nastia Liukin Cup in 2010, competed on Dancing with the Stars, graduated from New York University in 2016, and works as a gymnastics analyst for NBC Sports.
