Nadia Comăneci, the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 at the Olympics, comes from Onești, Romania, and married US Olympic champion Bart Conner in 1996. Their marriage joined two of the best-known names in gymnastics.
Nadia Elena Comăneci was born on 12 November 1961 in Onești, Romania, to Gheorghe Comăneci, an auto mechanic, and Ștefania-Alexandrina Comăneci, and she has a younger brother, Adrian. So energetic as a child that her mother struggled to manage her, she was enrolled in gymnastics. At 14, at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, she scored the first perfect 10.0 in Olympic gymnastics and went on to earn seven of them in those Games.
In November 1989, weeks before the Romanian revolution, she defected across the border into Hungary and made her way to the United States. There she renewed her friendship with Bart Conner, the Chicago-born gymnast she had first met in 1976.
Nadia and Bart married on 27 April 1996 in Bucharest, in a ceremony broadcast live across Romania. Their son, Dylan Paul Conner, was born in Oklahoma City in 2006. The couple settled in Norman, Oklahoma, where they run the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy, making them one of the most famous marriages in the history of the sport.
