The Uchimura family of Nagasaki is the gymnastics family of Kohei Uchimura, two-time Olympic all-around champion, whose parents were both gymnasts. His younger sister Haruhi also competed in the sport, and he is widely regarded as the greatest male all-around gymnast of all time.
Kohei Uchimura was born on 3 January 1989 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. His parents, Kazuhisa and Shuko Uchimura, had both been competitive gymnasts, and they opened Sports Club Uchimura in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture, where Kohei began training in 1992, at the age of three. His younger sister, Haruhi, grew up in the same gym and also became a gymnast.
Kohei Uchimura's dominance was unprecedented. Between 2009 and 2016 he was unbeaten in the all-around at world and Olympic level, winning six straight world titles and back-to-back Olympic golds, and he led Japan to the team title at Rio 2016. The foundation for all of it was a small family club in Nagasaki, run by two parents who had competed in the sport themselves.
