About the Gabby Douglas Family Tree - Parents and Siblings family

The Douglas family is the family of Gabby Douglas, the first African American woman to win the Olympic all-around gymnastics title, at London 2012. Her mother Natalie Hawkins and siblings Arielle, Joyelle and Johnathan shared her road to the Olympics on the reality series Douglas Family Gold.

Origins

Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas was born on 31 December 1995 in Newport News, Virginia, one of four children of Natalie Hawkins. Her father is Timothy Douglas, a staff sergeant in the Air National Guard who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gabby started gymnastics at six after her eldest sister, Arielle, persuaded their mother to sign her up for classes.

At 14 Gabby moved alone to West Des Moines, Iowa, to train with coach Liang Chow, living with a host family while her mother and siblings stayed in Virginia. The sacrifice paid off two years later in London.

Notable members

  • Gabby Douglas, 2012 Olympic all-around champion and three-time Olympic gold medallist.
  • Natalie Hawkins, Gabby's mother and manager, and the central figure of Douglas Family Gold.
  • Arielle Hawkins, the eldest sister who first steered Gabby into gymnastics.
  • Joyelle Douglas and Johnathan Douglas, Gabby's sister and brother, who appeared with the family on television.
  • Timothy Douglas, Gabby's father, an Air National Guard staff sergeant.

Significance

The Douglas family became one of the best-known families in American sport after London 2012, when a teenager whose family had made real sacrifices for her training won the sport's biggest individual prize. In 2016 Oxygen aired Douglas Family Gold, a six-episode series following Gabby, her mother, her siblings and her grandmother as they balanced their own lives with her bid for the Rio Olympics, where she won a second team gold.
