Most people put off building a family tree because they imagine it needs to be complete before they start — every ancestor, every date, every certificate. It doesn't. The best family trees start small and grow as relatives fill in the gaps.

4. Let the tree grow over weeks, not one sitting. Family history surfaces in conversations, not deadlines.

The tree doesn't need to be finished to be useful. A half-built tree that your family can see and add to beats a perfect one that only exists in your head.

After the first draft

Once the basic structure is in place, go back and add the details that turn a chart into a record: occupations, hometowns, a short bio for anyone who might otherwise be forgotten. These are the details that grandchildren will actually want to read one day.
